What is a packing list?

A packing list records exactly what physically ships: which rolls, from which dye lots, at what yardage.

Also called: PL, delivery note.

It is the document that connects inventory to the invoice. When a packing list is created, the yardage should come off stock immediately — otherwise the system shows fabric that has already left the building.

Because a customer may take several shipments before being billed, one invoice is often raised from several packing lists. Re-keying that is where transcription errors enter the receivables ledger.
